Balouo Salo Drinking Water
A unique system in the world to produce drinking water
Senegal
In many rural communities in Senegal, drinking water is a rare resource, often contaminated or completely absent. The lack of safe sources compromises health, hygiene, and development.
The Balouo Salo Drinking Water project aims to create innovative architectural structures capable of harvesting potable water from atmospheric humidity through a natural condensation process.
Helping us achieve this important goal is the world’s most visionary architect, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, whose firm KKAA is designing an innovative model that could become a unique global standard, able to produce drinking water without electricity or complex hydraulic and filtration systems.
A one-of-a-kind solution that could revolutionize the issue and offer a universal answer.
Use innovative designs and materials for the natural condensation of atmospheric humidity, providing safe water with zero environmental impact.
Implement a passive system requiring no electricity or pumps, perfectly adapted to the climatic and social context.
Reduce waterborne diseases and infections by improving access to safe sources, benefiting children, women, and the elderly.
Develop a modular infrastructure replicable in other villages that can inspire solutions worldwide.
Rural communities face daily shortages of potable water, with serious health and social consequences. Available sources are often contaminated, distant, or seasonal.
Balouo Salo, with the help of the renowned Japanese firm Kengo Kuma & Associates, is developing a unique and revolutionary project that uses atmospheric humidity condensation to obtain drinking water, through vertical architectural structures built with local and sustainable materials.
These designs aim to capture moisture present in the air, even without rain, transforming it into water that is collected and distributed to users. The system will be passive, completely autonomous, requiring no electricity or hydraulic lifting systems.
Besides direct access, the project includes community awareness on safe water management and participatory maintenance of the structures.
An initiative that combines innovation, tradition, and sustainability to solve a vital problem and build resilience in the most vulnerable areas.
Further technical data will be published on this page after the design studies conducted by KKAA.
Kengo Kuma, founder of KKAA - Tokyo, Japan
Kengo Kuma is among the most influential architects worldwide, known for his highly sustainable and innovative approach. Having become an honorary member of Balouo Salo, he decided to support the humanitarian cause by designing a highly efficient design for this project.
This is an ambitious project that could solve the global drinking water access issue. We need help and support to achieve this result. We already have the invaluable backing of the world’s most important and visionary architect, Kengo Kuma. Now it’s up to you to join this mission.
