Healthcare on the Move

  • Location: Sédhiou Region, Senegal
  • Theme: Mobile medical care access
  • Goal: Conversion of a bus into a hospital
  • Beneficiaries: Over 20,000 people in rural areas
  • Status: Analysis and design phase

In many rural areas of southern Senegal, access to medical care is severely limited by lack of infrastructure and suitable transport. Entire families are excluded from necessary medical visits, check-ups, and treatments due to economic and logistical barriers.

The Balouo Salo Mobile Hospital Bus project aims to transform a bus into a fully equipped mobile health facility, featuring pediatric, gynecological, and geriatric consultation rooms, laboratories, portable ultrasound machines, and a mobile pharmacy.

With scheduled monthly missions, the bus will reach the most remote villages, providing consultations, diagnoses, and treatments on-site, all completely free of charge. This unique innovation will revolutionize healthcare access by bringing essential services directly to those who need them most.

Schedule periodic stops along main regional routes to progressively cover a wide area and reach all isolated communities.

The Project

Balouo Salo Mobile Hospital Bus – exterior render

In the rural context where Balouo Salo operates, poverty and lack of transportation often make timely access to medical care impossible for communities. This situation worsens diseases, complications, and preventable mortality.

The Balouo Salo Mobile Hospital Bus project aims to reverse this trend by bringing healthcare directly to the most remote villages via a bus converted into a mobile hospital. Inside the bus, there will be dedicated rooms for pediatrics, gynecology, and geriatrics, equipped with advanced medical devices, a laboratory, portable ultrasounds, and a mobile pharmacy.

Regular bus missions will allow specialist visits, monitoring, consultations, and minor interventions, providing a free and accessible service to thousands. When necessary, transfers to better-equipped facilities can be arranged.

A medical team composed of Balouo Salo professionals, integrated with specialists, will provide qualified and continuous care, strengthening the local health network.

This project represents an extraordinary innovation for the African continent, delivering quality medical care where no one has arrived before, radically transforming the right to health for rural populations.

Expected Results

The Balouo Salo mobile hospital will radically change access to care for thousands of isolated people. Thanks to visits, check-ups, and treatments provided directly on the bus, a significant reduction in undiagnosed diseases and preventable complications is expected.
