The Simbandi elementary school, built years ago by the community, remained incomplete: without a roof, doors, windows, bathrooms, water system, or flooring. Children studied in precarious conditions, exposed to dust and health risks.

Balouo Salo, together with the Municipality and local builders, organized the work, providing materials and coordinating the site with involvement from families.

Today, the school has a roof, bathrooms, water connection, doors, windows, floor screeds, and finishes. Over 250 students per year can study in a safe and welcoming environment that protects their health, concentration, and well-being, becoming a symbol of resilience and the right to education.

The Project

Renovation of Simbandi Elementary School - Balouo Salo Students and teachers - Simbandi School

The elementary school of Simbandi, in the municipality of Simbandi Brassou, was built years ago by the local community to meet the growing need for education for the children of the area. However, due to limited resources, the structure remained incomplete for years: without a roof, doors and windows, bathrooms, water connection, floors, or proper finishes.

This situation exposed hundreds of students daily to health and hygiene risks and severely limited learning conditions: classrooms were uncomfortable and did not favor concentration or physical and mental well-being. Three typical deficiencies, such as the lack of desks and tables, had already been solved by Balouo Salo through a targeted donation, but it was still necessary to complete the renovation works.

To protect the right to education and children’s health, Balouo Salo collaborated with the municipality and the entire beneficiary community, involving local builders and parents in the construction work. Materials were supplied, sites organized, and targeted interventions defined to make the school safe, functional, and comfortable.

Main interventions included: completing the roof to protect students from sun and weather, building bathrooms and water connections, installing doors and windows, creating floor screeds to reduce dust and sand, and internal and external finishes to create a more welcoming environment.

Thanks to this project, the Simbandi school today offers a safe and stimulating environment for the learning of over 250 students per year, improving their hygiene and health conditions and supporting concentration, health, and psychophysical development. This intervention not only completes a building but strengthens the right to education and the active participation of the community.
